Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral violence is a significant concern in many democracies, and its effects extend beyond human casualties to include severe damage to public infrastructure. In Nigeria, electoral violence has been known to disrupt not only the political process but also essential public infrastructure, such as roads, schools, and healthcare facilities. Katsina Local Government, located in the northern part of Nigeria, has witnessed various forms of electoral violence during election periods. This study will investigate how electoral violence has impacted public infrastructure in Katsina, focusing on the extent of physical damage, the disruption of public services, and the long-term effects on local development (Yakubu & Mohammed, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral violence, often fueled by political competition and ethnic tensions, has led to the destruction of public infrastructure in many Nigerian regions. Katsina Local Government has experienced multiple instances of violence during elections, with significant damage to both government and private property. Despite this, limited research has been conducted on the relationship between electoral violence and its impact on public infrastructure, especially at the local government level. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the extent of damage caused to infrastructure, the economic costs, and the challenges in recovery post-violence (Dantani & Bello, 2023).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of the broader effects of electoral violence, especially on public infrastructure, which is crucial for long-term local development. The findings will provide valuable information for policymakers, local authorities, and development agencies working to mitigate the effects of electoral violence and protect public resources.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the effects of electoral violence on public infrastructure in Katsina Local Government, Katsina State. Limitations include difficulty in accessing firsthand accounts of infrastructure damage, potential biases in estimating the economic costs, and challenges in generalizing the findings to other regions.
